What is PMSC?

Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps, PMSC, is a local initiative of AmeriCorps. This National Service Movement engages thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds in a domestic Peace Corps. Members serve their communities in the areas of education, environmental stewardship, and community wellness. Members receive a living stipend, educational monies, and a wealth of experience.

Located in Southwest and South Central Pennsylvania, PMSC provides service opportunities through nonprofit or government organizations across a fifteen-county region.

What We Do

  • Education: In Pennsylvania’s public schools, PMSC members provide literacy and math intervention and enrichment to PA learners in grades K-12. Members engage children and families in opportunities for service and learning–improving school climate and building health relationships so that students and grow and thrive to their fullest potential. 

  • Environmental Stewardship: On PA’s public lands, PMSC member steward trail systems, remove invasive species, stabilize stream banks, plants native trees other species, maintain trails, and clean-up dumping. Along PA’s public waterways, PMSC members collect water quality data, patrol for illegal dumping, improve water quality, and upgrade aquatic habitats.

  • Community Wellness: Members provide educational programming to youth and adults on healthy life choices and behaviors; they provide assessment, intakes and referrals for affordable housing, food, and mental/health crisis services; they increase community outreach; and provide volunteer management and recruitment.
